ELKHORN -- The 162nd annual Walworth County Fair opens today and runs through Labor Day Monday, Sept. 5.

This year’s theme, “It’s a Boatload of Fun” will be carried throughout the fair with a costume contest and fashion show on Saturday, Sept. 3. This event is open to anyone — dress in your nautical and military-style outfits. Register at the Park Stage by 10 a.m. Saturday.

Sail back in time to the days of home preservation with the 20th annual Pride on Display contest. Contestants of all ages enter their four best pickled items to win a first prize of $150.

At the grandstand, enjoy two days of truck and tractor pulls to start the fair. On Thursday, a new pulling event featuring garden tractors, will take place after the Antique and Senior Class Truck & Tractor Pull, which begin at noon. Feel the power of the big rigs at 7 p.m. Wednesday and experience the Badger State Tractor/Truck Pull at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Settle in for some country music from Montgomery Gentry on Friday, Rodney Atkins on Saturday and The Doobie Brothers on Sunday. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstand. That’s not the only music to be had however — check out the Pepsi Stage and the Park Stage for additional music all week long.

One of the most popular areas of the fair is Kiddieland where children and their parents can experience hands-on games and events. Daily events include pony rides, kiddie carnival, pig races, an agriculture learning center and the Barnyard Adventure Tent.

The fair closes out with three showings of the ever-popular Demolition Derby on Monday, Labor Day. Catch all of the fender-bending action at 1:45 p.m., 4 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.

The Wallworth County Fairgrounds are located at 411 E. Court St. (Wisconsin Highway 11) in Elkhorn. Tickets are available at the gates. For general information on fair events, check out the website at www.walworthcountyfair.com or call the fair office at (262) 723-3228.
