DELAVAN TOWNSHIP — The Lakeland Animal Shelter announced Thursday that it recently closed on the purchase of 13 acres of land adjacent to its current property.

The acreage brings the total property to 18 acres and includes increased frontage on Wisconsin Highway 67 south of Elkhorn in the town of Delavan.

“We are excited to have taken this first step in our expansion project,” Executive Director Kristen Perry said in a news release. “Our current facilities are cramped and outdated. The building was built in 1979 to provide temporary shelter for 50 animals. Currently, that same building houses 200 animals. Every square inch of the building has been re-purposed to provide medical care, shelter and training for the animals. Acquiring this land is the first step toward expanding our space and building a shelter that meets current and future county needs.”

The organization will begin a fundraising campaign in 2012, and it hopes to break ground in 2014.

“Our new facility will have specific rooms dedicated to training and socializing the animals, adoption, feeding and medical care and more,” Perry said. “It will even include an educational center. And, of course, (it) will provide clean, safe shelter for the animals. This new land will accommodate our new building, parking and will serve for exercising the animals.”

The shelter has served Walworth County for more than 35 years. In 2010, about 2,500 animals came through the shelter’s doors. The shelter is sustained through contributions from more than 5,000 private donors. Nearly 40 volunteers donated 10,300 hours in 2010.
